In 2014 a referendum on the matter of Scottish independence from the United Kingdom was held. 55% voted against, and Scotland continued to be part of the UK. The Scottish National Party (SNP) is a socially progressive party who are pro-independence. The SNP currently form the Scottish government, making them responsible for devolved issues like healthcare, education and policing. The prime minister of the United Kingdom, Keir Starmer, has made clear his opposition to holding another independence referendum.
The next elections for the Scottish parliament will be held in May 2026.
